Parental Guilt

Parental guilt is nearly universal β€” but it's not always helpful. A way to examine it with honesty and self-compassion.

Guilt is a sign you care. But guilt isn\'t always accurate, and carrying it constantly doesn\'t make you a better parent β€” it depletes you. The goal here is to examine it honestly, not silence it, not wallow in it.

Common forms of parental guilt

"I lost my temper" β€” anger guilt

"I work too much" β€” absence guilt

"I don't enjoy this" β€” enjoyment guilt

"I'm not doing enough" β€” inadequacy guilt

"I made the wrong choice for them" β€” decision guilt

"I'm not the parent I thought I'd be" β€” identity guilt

What are you feeling guilty about?

Write it down β€” it doesn\'t matter how small or large it seems.
